jordyn mcnamee kaydin davis buffalo high school rodeo club team roping sheridan high school rodeo

The duo finished a long Memorial Day weekend with a top 7 finish at Monday’s rodeo in Buffalo, the third consecutive day of action that started with the Sheridan High School Rodeo held at the Johnson County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

The Buffalo Rodeo Club hosted the Sunday and Monday rodeos to finish off the regular season.

“It’s been pretty good,” McNamee said. “I think this is our third time placing. It’s been really fun. Kaydin and I have known each other a long time. It’s been great playing basketball with her and then jumping right into rodeo.”

McNamee moved to Buffalo last summer from Hulett where she rodeoed and made a name for herself on the basketball court. She finished all-conference and all-state in 2017 and 2018. In 2018 she was named 1A Northeast player of the year.

Davis not only has the similar rodeo pedigree, but has also shined on the basketball floor. She has earned all-conference and all-state honors the past two seasons and helped lead a potent Lady Bison offense and defense on the court.

And while rodeo is on the mind of every cowboy and cowgirl this time of year, for Davis and McNamee basketball isn’t exactly on the back burner.

“The one weekend we had off before state finals rodeo we had basketball camp at Black Hills State,” McNamee said. “We will be bouncing around a bit but we’re both pretty excited.”

Camp seemed to go smoothly over the weekend for the duo and the rest of the Lady Bison team.

“Camp went well. It was good to be back on the court,” Davis said. “We played some Wyoming teams we always play, but it was still good. We won every game.”

Aside from basketball camp, it’s been practicing in the arena for both as they prepare for the biggest high school rodeo of the season so far. Good performances in Gillette will lead to a spot in the National High School Finals Rodeo this summer in Rock Springs.

“We’ll be roping together this weekend at state, and we’ve been practicing breakaway together and going to each other’s houses to practice,” Davis said. “Breakaway is probably our best chance. We both rope calves well and it’s our favorite event.”

After spring and fall rodeo, it will hopefully be a successful and healthy return to the basketball floor for McNamee who suffered an injury that sidelined her for a month near the end of last basketball season. A torn ligament in her ankle healed in time as she managed to hobble through the final regular season game against Douglas, and then helped lead the Lady Bison to a second place finish at regionals and third at state.

“We’re hoping we are on the floor together a lot next year,” Davis said. “It will be a new team, but it will be a good team.”

The pair is looking to take care of business in the rodeo arena first, however.

“We’re both super excited about basketball season. But this weekend we are going to state finals and we’re going to every event we can,” McNamee said. “As much rodeo as we do in the spring, it seems to come down to state. Whoever does well at state will be going to nationals. I feel like we are both in a pretty good spot.”
