DETROIT (FOX 2) - Detroit Police said Wednesday a 25-year-old man was shot in the face and shoulder after an argument on a city bus over gym shoes.

Police said the shooting happened around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon in Midtown near Selden and Woodward. According to police, he was on a bus when a 30-year-old started arguing about gym shoes.

Police said the argument spilled outside the bus and the 30-year-old man pulled out a gun and shot him twice, once in the face and once in the shoulder.

"It's a senseless act of violence that didn't have to happen. It shouldn't have taken place," said Detroit Police Captain Rodney Cox. "My understanding is this took place over a pair of gym shoes."

Police say neither man live in the Midtown area but were on a bus going north on Woodward when the argument started. The bus eventually stopped and the argument spilled into the street before the shooting took place.

The younger of the two men was shot twice with dozens of people around, on the bus, and walking around in nearby businesses.

The suspect walked about a block away before he was arrested. Police don't believe the two men knew each other.

Police credit the quick arrest to many witnesses who gave them a good description. He was arrested near a McDonald's nearby and police said he was still holding the gun.

"It's not just the police who won't tolerate this type of behavior but it's the witnesses and the businesses here in midtown. They'll see to it that they'll give us enough information to take appropriate action," Cox said.

The 25-year-old man is fighting for his life at the hospital. Detroit police say they're confident they've got their shooter and expect charges to be filed soon.

"When something like this happens, there's other ways to settle that besides resorting to violence. But if you're someone that feels like this is something you have to do and this is how you settle your disputes, we will find you, we will take you into custody and we will hold you accountable," Cox said.
