The Cody boys soccer team will kick off this weekend with hopes it can make a return to the state tournament. This will be no easy task for a young team sporting few upperclassmen that lost some of its top scorers from 2018.

“We lost a good core group of players last year,” coach Kory Jansma said. “I’m looking for some of the young kids to step up into some roles, fill some big shoes that we’re going to be missing a bit.”

On the bright side, the freshmen and sophomores suiting up for the Broncs on the pitch this year are a strong core that will likely lead the team into the future. Of the 41 players participating in the high school program around 25 are underclassmen.

Senior Juan Hernandez said it’s his goal to help guide these players.

Hernandez only had two goals last season but hopes to score every game this year, with a goal of scoring 20 times by the end of the season.

“Hopefully I can step it up and help the team have a bright future,” he said

Hernandez is a four-year veteran of the program, experiencing three state tournaments and one championship during his career.

“He’s been around the game for awhile, knows what I expect,” Jansma said. “He’s definitely one I’m looking to step out into a leadership role.”
