with Church ties Orthodox Dushanbe

As reported 5.UA yesterday, 15 October 2018, the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, which met in Minsk, has chose to sever communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate's decision to grant autocephaly to a United Local Ukrainian Church.

The break comes in response to the decision of Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople and the "first among equals" leader of the global Orthodox Church, to issue a statement October 11 confirming plans for an independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church and restoring ties with the previously schismatic Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate.

The split is seen as a show of force by Moscow after a Ukrainian church was granted independence.

On October 11, the Synod lifted the anathema from Filaret, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyivan Patriarchate, and Makariy, the Primate of Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. We respect the ecumenical Patriarch as a voice of religious tolerance and interreligious dialogue.

If the situation reaches its logical but absurd end, the hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church will be left without the Holy Fire on Easter.

"A decision was taken to completely sever ties", Metropolitan Ilarion told reporters in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, announcing Russian retaliation against Constantinople.

While the Patriarch of Moscow up to now has formally overseen Orthodox churches in Ukraine, the country has two other Orthodox authorities which have splintered off without being recognised by Constantinople - until last week.

The diocese is the canonical subjection of the Russian Orthodox Church. From now on it will also boycott joint Orthodox Church ceremonies. It was previously rented by one of the branches of Ukraine's split Orthodox Church.

Moldova's pro-Russian President, Igor Dodon, has said that he will soon present an initiative to hold a pan-Orthodox Council on the territory of Moldova.

Constantinople's decision last week ended more than 300 years of Moscow's control over Orthodox churches in Ukraine and affects millions of believers in Russian Federation and Ukraine. Ukraine's President, Petro Poroshenko, said the religious move marks an "apogee of Ukrainian sovereignty" and "an end to Ukraine's colonized relationship with Russian Federation".

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate effectively declared itself independent from Moscow in 1992, and is considered by the Russian Orthodox to be a schismatic group. In the first half of 2018 alone, Ukraine witnessed 10 new attacks on Russian Orthodox Churches.

The Bishops' Conference of the Finnish Orthodox Church said the decision by Moscow was "unilateral, sad and very unfortunate" and hoped the patriarchs would resolve the conflict in mutual negotiations.
