A plumber discovered a dead body inside a pillar at a Los Angeles-area grocery store over the weekend — and authorities believe it might have belonged to a man who evaded police last week.

The manager at WinCo Foods in Lancaster noticed a foul stench coming from the area on Saturday and initially suspected it was a sewage issue, prompting him to call a plumber, an official with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told local news station KTLA.

But the plumber quickly realized that wasn’t the case once he began chipping away at the pillar and saw a leg and a tennis shoe appear underneath the stone.

They then alerted authorities, who have not released an identity for the body.

Lt. John Corina told KTLA, however, that a man suspected of car theft had gone up to that grocery store’s roof last week after police pulled him over last Monday.

"It's unusual. I've never seen anything like this before — some body inside a column," Corina told the station. "Somebody tries to hide from the police and they can't get out and end up dying in there.”

He added, "That's what it looks like anyway."

It’s possible to access the stone pillar where the body was found from the WinCo Foods roof.

An official for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to the Daily News that the body was found Saturday, but was not immediately available to provide further information. Authorities have not issued an update Monday.
