SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —

A Puerto Rican couple said they were refused entry into a popular nightlife spot in Sacramento over their identification cards.

Dive Bar, located on K Street, is known for its mermaid shows throughout the evening.

Frank Burgos and Yashira Rivera, who are visiting from San Juan, Puerto Rico, had the bar on their itinerary. The couple said when they gave the security guard their ID, they were told it wasn’t valid.

"'No, we cannot accept these IDs,’” recalled Burgos. “And then he asked for a passport, and I said, 'I didn't have them with me.' So we left."

Puerto Rican ID cards are just like identification cards in California or other states. They are used for domestic travel at airports, to book hotels and car rentals.

"I was really surprised. I travel a lot, and I have never encountered that problem," Burgos said.

Dive Bar declined an interview. But personnel initially told KCRA the bar is required to scan all IDs upon entry, and the couple’s Puerto Rican IDs were not scannable. And since they didn’t have a passport with them, they were denied entry.

However, Bagos argued the security guard didn’t even attempt to scan their identification cards, which have a bar code on the back.

“No, he just looked at it with a flashlight,” Bagos said. “He said he could not accept the ID, and that's it."

PatronScan is the company that makes the ID scanner used by Dive Bar. The company told KCRA their scanners recognize 3,800 government-issued IDs, including Puerto Rico.

In a statement, Dive Bar said, “We are a fully compliant business and welcome everyone. We have a dress code at night and scan all IDs.”
