Love and for some

FLINT, Michigan (WJRT) - (05/10/2018) - It's that time of year. This week folks are lacing up their shoes and hitting the streets of Flint as the CrimFit Training Program kicks into action.

It's looking like it may be a record year for enrollment for the Crim Festival of Races.

Thursday night runners picked up their training packets at Ballenger Field House.

It was a night of firsts for 53-year old Merrilee Stankewicz of Flushing:

"I want to do something healthy I want to get back in shape," she said.

She signed up for her very first CrimFit Training Program this year. Her goal?

"Cross that line and see my family and know that I did it," she said.

Race Director Andy Younger says the run-walk program is designed to help participants like Marilee do exactly that:

"It's intervals of running and walking, it allows you to recover much more easily," he said.

"I have a history of diabetes in my family, my goal is not to be dependent on medication," said group leader Bermicia Parks.

She started over a decade ago. While she began with the walking portion, she's now leading a running group.

The program is also where she met her future husband, Lee Parks who was also her neighbor at the time:

"My husband runs twice as fast as I do, but he actually talked to me for the very first time at the Atwood Race," she said.

"After a race, Atwood Race, we started actually talking," Lee Parks said.

"OK this may be a good way to catch your man," said Bermicia.

"My co-leader Ginnie, she actually met her husband through the CrimFit Training Program," Lee added.

While there's no guarantee you'll meet your future spouse here, Parks, who is also a group leader, said the support provided during group runs is key.

"If they're falling behind or having a bad day, you know we encourage them and nobody's left behind," he said.

A strategy that appeals to first timers like Merrilee:

"I'm going to meet new friends, become healthier, it's a win win for me," she said.

It's not too late to register for the program. For more information just click on the link to the right of this story.
