Eastern’s Smalley signs with Aurora

GREENTOWN — Eastern basketball player Nolan Smalley on Wednesday signed to play at Aurora University. The NCAA D-III school is located in Aurora, Illinois, and is a member of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

The 6-foot-4 post had a nice senior season, averaging team highs of 11 points and 8.3 rebounds and shooting 57.2 percent from the field in leading the Comets to an 8-15 record. He was a KT All-Area second-team selection.

As a junior, he led the Comets with averages of 9.9 points and 6.3 rebounds.

Aurora went 20-9 overall and 16-4 in NACC play in 2017-18. The Spartans swept the NACC regular-season and tournament titles, taking the conference’s automatic bid to the D-III tournament. The Spartans won their game in the round of 64 before falling to eventual champion Nebraska Wesleyan in the second round.

Cougar baseball thrashes IWU

The IU Kokomo baseball squad beat Indiana Wesleyan 10-0 Wednesday, putting the game away early in seven innings. The Cougars scored single runs in the first and second frames at Kokomo Municipal Stadium, then took over with six runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth.

IUK pitchers Eston Stull, Nick Cottongim and Clarke Davenport combined on the shutout. Stull started and threw five innings for the win. He gave up just three hits and three walks while striking out six. Cottongim threw a perfect sixth and Davenport threw a perfect seventh.

Kody Bledsoe led the Cougars at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Noah Darr, John Tuttle and Tavon Lindsay were each 2 for 3 and Mason Bruce was 2 for 5. Bruce scored twice and had two RBIs. Tuttle hit a two-run homer in the fourth.

The Cougars (25-17-1) host River States Conference foe Brescia at KMS on Friday and Saturday. The Brescia opener is Friday at 1 p.m. IWU (28-15) and IUK play again next Wednesday at KMS.

KPBR to hold tryouts, late signups

The Kokomo Parents Babe Ruth baseball league will hold tryouts at 11 a.m. Saturday at Huston Park for those who have signed up. Players should bring bat, glove and shoes.

The league will take late signups starting at 10 a.m. To register, a player must have his birth certificate and proof of insurance. The entry fee is $165 up front, or $85 up front (non-refundable) and $80 before the first game.

Huston Park is located at 2801 N. Webster.

2 coaches win Griddys; 2 players Prime 25

WHITESTOWN — The Indiana Football Digest team on Sunday held its 11th annual Griddys awards program to celebrate Indiana high school football. The Griddys aim to honor the best of the past season and preview the next season.

Two KT-area coaches who stepped down following the 2017 season received awards. Kokomo’s Brett Colby was named the Class 5A Coach of the Year for leading the Wildkats to a state runner-up finish. Tri-Central’s George Gilbert received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Griddys program also unveiled the 2018 Prime Time 25. These current juniors will appear on the cover of the 2018 Indiana Football Digest. The players were chosen to represent the best of Indiana football based on athletic and academic achievement as well as community involvement.

Two KT-area players made the Prime Time 25 — Kokomo defensive lineman/tight end Javias Gray and Tipton quarterback K.J. Roudebush.
