LUCERNE >> On Christmas Eve, the Rock of Faith Community Outreach Church in Lucerne will give away 250 brand new pairs of shoes to “absolutely anyone in need across the county,” Pastor Charles Thomas said.

The church has donated free shoes to hundreds of locals every December 24 for the past seven years. Now on their eight-year mark, congregation members will gather at Alpine Park in Lucerne to hand out pairs in all sizes for men, women, and children, starting at noon.

Thomas suggests arriving by noon as shoes go by quick. “We aren’t out there for too long because they go by fast. Every year it seems we get more and more people,” he explained.

There are several reasons why the fellowship has the giveaway, but Thomas said it all comes down to one thing: seeing the children smile.

“I want to make sure that children have something new, like something as essential as shoes, on Christmas,” the pastor said.

And although the church started handing out shoes for children only, it wasn’t very long until they gave away adult sizes. Thomas said what moved him to offer for more was a man with battered boots, who used plastic bags as socks.

“The man told me that because he had no socks and his boots were worn out he used plastic bags to protect his feet from the rain,” said Thomas. “I realized children weren’t the only ones in need of new shoes. We also started giving away fresh pairs of socks.”

In addition to shoes and socks, Rock of Faith will giveaway “blessing bags,” which include items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, and energy bars. Coffee and doughnuts will also be served.

Pastor Thomas can be reached at 707-245-3360. Alpine Park is located at 5985 E. Highway 20, Lucerne.
