ALLENTOWN, Pa. - It may be flip flop weather for some, but there is still a need for socks, according to one local organization in the Lehigh Valley.

The goal is to collect 10,000 pairs of socks this spring to help the homeless population.

Every Thursday morning organizers of the Clothes Closet at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Allentown open the doors to people in need.

"We get a lot of people in the community who are having difficulty making ends meet," said Leslie Talago, parish administrator at St. Luke's Lutheran. "That's from the working poor to the homeless."

The group has everything to outfit a man, woman or child, but there's one item they can't keep on the shelves: socks.

"Socks for people that are homeless is like Christmas morning opening a present," said Talago.

The group says socks prevent injuries and serious medical conditions.

Many homeless do a lot of walking or don't have adequate footwear.

The Lehigh Valley Business Group recognizes the need and for the last two years has held a sock drive in the spring.

CEO and founder Kevin Cope says they collected more than 9,000 pairs of socks in 2018, and this year they want 10,000.

"We've already collected close to 2,000 pair within the first few weeks that we already had donated," said Cope.

The socks must be new.

St. Luke's Lutheran received 400 pairs Tuesday afternoon. They will be distributed to agencies and organizations.
