Hiking about Backpacking JOURNALS Full

Short Answer: I am planning a NOBO AT thru hike (that means Northbound on the Appalachian Trail all at once starting in Georgia ending in Maine) in late April

Longer Answer:

For those of you that don't know me, my name is Jeff(rey). Well, for my friends/private life I go by "Jeff" but my professional/work life I go by "Jeffrey". Just kind of happened naturally due to official names on resumes and people shortening names.

Anyway, I have been living in the beautiful city of Durham, North Carolina for the last 3.5 years and working for the American Red Cross. The Triangle, as it's know, has been good, but when I moved here from the West Coast I was hoping to find somewhere I wanted to settle and not sure it's here. Also, for the last dozen years I have developed what started as enjoyment of the outdoors to right now an annoying feeling whenever I'm inside and it's sunny. So I figured, "I'm young, decent shapes, nothing tying me here...why not?"

In order to get better weather and miss the hiker bubble, my plan is to leave late April 22 and hopefully get to Maine before winter! Worst case scenario I will flip-flop but REALLY want to end at Katahdin. I have done that as a day hike and I can't imagine not finishing with it. Otherwise I would have done southbound. Well, that and I am possibly moving further north so the direction is also symbolic.

Speaking of symbolism, I am doing this in celebration of my 33rd birthday. That number has a lot of meaning to one of my good hiker friends and my favorite number is 22 so close enough! I would love to have left on March 26, but 1) not ready, 2) hiker bubble, and 3) possibly worse weather.

I am a big picture guy, not really into gear and planning logistics so should be interesting...
