March has been a tug-of-war between spring and winter in the eastern United States and the conditions shifted back in winter’s favor as a snowstorm brought several inches of snow into the Northeast on Friday.

Signs of the converging seasons were evident as snow coated plants and flowers that had already bloomed thanks to the prolonged warmth in late February.

Many locations in the Northeast that experienced springlike warmth as recently as Thursday had crews treating and plowing snow-covered roads through Thursday night and into Friday morning.

New York City saw a high of 61 F on Thursday, but residents in the Big Apple woke up to temperatures in the mid-30s with snow falling at a moderate rate around 7 a.m. EST Friday.

Philadelphia approached 70 on Thursday afternoon, but temperatures settled in the mid-30s Friday morning. Some areas to the northwest of the city, including Valley Forge, had received 1-2 inches with snow still falling during the mid-morning hours. Most of the accumulation came on non-paved surfaces.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported flight delays at Philadelphia International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport and LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports in New York City.

As snow fell during the morning, several accidents were reported on Interstate 80 in central Pennsylvania, including a multi-vehicle accident just east of Bellefonte. Another accident closed a stretch of I-81 in northeastern Pennsylvania between exit 141 and exit 143.

The New Jersey State Police urged motorists to drive with caution. Speed limits were reduced on the New Jersey Turnpike on a stretch from interchange 6 to the George Washington Bridge.
