Trump After Call israel Nations

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday that he had ordered the freezing of millions of Israeli funds aimed at United Nations institutions following the Security Council's adopting a resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Cruz called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu late Saturday evening to wish him a happy Chanukah, and to assure the leader that the United States Congress will work to reverse the decision.

However, a resolution on reining in Israeli settlement building passed Friday at the Security Council after the USA chose not to veto the resolution.

Netanyahu, seemingly on a campaign of diplomatic punishment, has recalled Israel's ambassadors to New Zealand and Senegal, and cancelled visits from Senegal and Ukraine emissaries.

Netanyahu said Sunday he has talked with "our friends in the United States, Republicans and Democrats alike" who "understand how reckless and destructive this U.N. resolution was".

The vote came in defiance of pressure from the president-elect, Donald Trump, as well as Israel and several U.S. senators who urged Washington to use its veto.

A senior US official said the Obama administration has not been involved in crafting or promoting the resolution.

From 1967 to late 2013, Israel built 125 settlements in the West Bank that have been recognized by the Ministry of the Interior as "communities", according to B'TSELEM - the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories. As a long-standing ally of Israel, Washington has shielded the Jewish nation from many similar resolutions before.

About 430,000 Israeli settlers now live in the West Bank and a further 200,000 Israelis live in east Jerusalem, which Palestinians see as the capital of their proposed state. But Mr Netanyahu said the U.S. had "failed to protect Israel".

The UN Security Council has passed a resolution demanding an end to Israel's settlement building on occupied territory.

It was adopted with 14 votes in favour, to a round of applause.

It demands a halt to "all Israeli settlement activities", saying this "is essential for salvaging the two-state solution".

Mr Netanyahu called the United States veto "shameful".

"The settlement problem has gotten so much worse that it is threatening the two-state solution", she said. "I think we have to find a way to get beyond this and try and deal with some of these differing views more privately".

The president-elect took to Twitter following the U.N. Security Council vote Friday saying, briefly, "As to the U.N., things will be different after January 20th".
