If you went anywhere near the internet in February 2015, you might remember a little phenomenon known as #thedress. The optical illusion caused an intense debate over which colours it really was, with the world split between blue and black or white and gold. (The answer was blue and black by the way.)

Well, another mind-bending photo is here to hurt your brain and ruin your friendships. Ready for it?

What colours are these flip-flops?

They’re unarguably, unquestionably blue and black in my eyes, but my coworkers (and the rest of the world) would like to disagree. According to a poll conducted by Buzzfeed, most people see white and gold, with the remaining voters split between black and blue; gold and blue; and blue and brown.

But ready for your mind to be truly blown? Havaianas confirmed to Buzzfeed that the shoes are actually none of the above. The stripes are really blue and dark blue:

flip flop, colours, colour, blue, black

So what’s happening in that viral photo then? For #thedress, scientists believed the picture forced the brain to decide how much light was shining on it, affecting colour perception in the process. ‘The image being overexposed and a little dull makes the colours more open to interpretation,’ an ophthalmologist told Seventeen.

Basically, some people saw a fair amount of illumination on a blue and black dress, while others saw a white and gold dress in shadow. The same optical trickery is probably going on here as well. So if your next family dinner ends up being pretty tame, bring out this photo and watch chaos ensue.
