SARATOGA SPRINGS >> All are encouraged to do their holiday shopping with a conscience this season at the third annual Saratoga Fair Trade Market Expo.

The first Saturday in December is the day that Capital Region residents will have the opportunity to join the fight against worldwide poverty while getting all their holiday shopping done in one location.

The Saratoga Fair Trade Market Expo will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Saratoga Springs City Center, located at 522 Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs.

This is a new, larger venue for the event, which was grown since its inception.

Admission is free for all shoppers.

Hosted by The Bosnian Handcraft Project and New Life Fellowship of Saratoga, The Fair Trade Market Expo is an easy way for the community to skip the crowded malls for a day and lend a hand up to artisans in the developing world, giving them the opportunity to earn an honorable living for themselves and support their families.

Everything on sale at the market has been made under fair trade conditions, meaning the artisans and producers receive fair compensation for their labor, enjoyed safe workplaces, and created their goods using environmentally friendly practices.

A total of 15 vendors, including several with roots in Saratoga Springs, will be displaying goods for sale at this year’s expo.

Vendors include Mango Tree Imports, The Bosnian Handcraft Project, AOET Uganda, The Giving Circle, Healthy Living Market, Bon Bon Brazil, and Razimus Jewelry.

Some of the unique products that shoppers can browse are Brazilian Brigadeiros, Ugandan and Bosnia jewelry, wood carvings from Guatemala, Mayan handwoven textiles, scarves, bags, table linens, sweaters, slippers and ornaments as well as handmade quilts from Vietnam, baskets and handbags from Africa and Asia.

The event will also feature a free all-day scavenger hunt with prizes for kids.

Organizers encourage everyone to shop with purpose this season while purchasing beautifully made merchandise for their loved ones and being part of the fair trade movement that is an effort to stop the exploitative labor practices around the world.

“We are so excited to be having the expo at the City Center this year,” event coordinator Mary Jo Kowalewski said. “I think the Saratoga community is thoughtful about how they shop for gifts. We will have local fair trade vendors as well as vendors that represent many different areas of the world. This gives shoppers a chance to shop locally and globally for beautiful hand made gifts in one place. This also gives all of us a chance to make a difference in the lives of artisans and producers in the USA and in tiny villages all around the globe.”
