Hi Shocks are filled with oil and have valves in them that allow the shock to compress rather quickly then return more slowly. This eliminates the bouncing the wheel would do without shocks. They are made with specific oil weight, valve sizes for up, different valve sizes down, travel length, tube/piston sizes, etc. The valves are set at different ratios for specific purposes ie. racing, 4 wheeling, luxury rides etc. Some shocks are adjustable. Cheers! perdidojoe My answer would be that (if you saw Gerry Cheever's mask, former Boston Bruin), that the correct answer would be to prevents cuts from his face. If you look at his mask, you will see that he "marked" every place on his mask wherein he would have suffered cuts. Masks, in his time did nothing to improve the "shock" that you would get if you were hit in the face. I played amateur hockey in NYC and I can tell you that when I "was clocked" --- the mask knocked me cold. NOW- goalies wear a helmet with a cage.
