State park naturalists will help conduct Saturday's "BioBlitz" being held at Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park in Gilbertsville.

GILBERTSVILLE -- Children across the commonwealth will soon have the opportunity to learn about and assist in scientific work at Kentucky State Parks while also helping make a positive impact on the environment.

On Saturday, state parks across Kentucky will hold a "BioBlitz"-- a short period of time when students, teachers, scientists and others conduct a count of animals, plants and other organisms in a designated area. Park naturalists and other experts will be on hand to help.

Activites at the Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park in Gilbertsville will include:

• Fish Electroshocking Demonstrations: All-day event with Brad Hartman of Murray State University's Hancock Biological Station. "Brad can take two visitors at a time out on short trips by boat. Participants must be age 12 and up with an adult, or 18 and up on their own, and be wearing close-toed, rubber-soled shoes. Each trip will be approximately 15-20 minutes."

• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Insect Discovery with University of Kentucky entomologists.

• 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Mushroom Walk with Susan Eizenga, vice president of Bluegrass Mycological Society.

• 2 to 3 p.m.: Aquatic Exploration. "Bring the kids to do some dip-netting with our park naturalists to see what kinds of little critters live in the water."

• 6:30 to 8 p.m.: Sunset Birding Trip to Kentucky. "Bring binoculars if you have them."
