gus reusch grand tour trip council citizens center

HAVERHILL — Historian Gus Reusch will be featured in a lighthearted presentation titled “Nuggets from the Letters of John Greenleaf Whittier” on Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St.

In addition to being a notable poet and abolitionist, Whittier was an advocate for the equality for women and had many women friends. He promoted women’s right to vote, to own property, and become published. Whittier was also a prolific letter writer who corresponded with his many woman friends, politicians, and other literary figures. It is estimated that he wrote more than 5,000 letters, and Reusch will share excerpts from some of his favorite letters. Contact Kathy or Rita at 978-374-2390 to register for this program.

Stomach problems discussed Feb. 6

HAVERHILL — “Laparoscopic Surgery for Gastroesophageal Reflux, Hiatal Hernia and Achalasia,” a medical Meet the Expert seminar with General Surgeon Brett Matthews, DO, will be held on Feb. 6 from 6 to 7 p.m. in Holy Family Hospital’s ground floor auditorium, 70 East St., Methuen. Matthews will discuss common foregut issues; surgical indications and techniques, and the pros and cons of medical and surgical treatments. Free and open to the public. Registration is required. Trip to Ireland planned in spring

HAVERHILL — The Council on Aging and Durgan Travel are offering a “Grand Tour of Ireland” trip from April 16 to 26. This trip will include nine nights hotel accommodations, full Irish breakfast and dinner daily, comprehensive sightseeing package, and a professional tour escort. Meditation group will meet on Fridays

HAVERHILL — The Council on Aging Meditation Group meets on Fridays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Library Room at the Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St. This group is free and open to all. Participants will learn the hows and whys of the timeless practice of meditation including Yoga, QiGong and breathing exercises to relax the body and mind.

Diabetic shoe clinic planned March 5

HAVERHILL — A diabetic shoe clinic will be held on March 5 at 9 a.m. at the Citizen Center, 10 Welcome St.

Medicare and some other insurers will cover the cost of one pair of diabetic shoes and inserts once per year. Pro Medical will be doing fittings for the shoes on March 5 starting at 9 a.m. Updated doctor’s orders are needed. Call Mary Connolly, RN at 978-374-2390, ext. 15 to schedule your appointment.
